Automated P&ID data extraction
Turn a stack of PDF P&IDs into validated line lists, equipment lists, valve lists and instrument tags. Traceable to the drawing, checked by a licensed PE, up to 10x faster than manual takeoff.
Why this deliverable still takes weeks
Every EPC project starts the same way: someone opens the P&IDs and starts typing tags into a spreadsheet. Line numbers, sizes, specs, insulation codes, equipment tags, valve tags, instrument bubbles. Hundreds of sheets, thousands of tags, and every one of them keyed by hand.
I did that work for years. It is slow, it is expensive, and it is where the errors come from. A transposed line number on sheet 42 shows up as a mismatch three months later in the isometrics, and by then it costs real money to fix.
The tools that promised to fix this needed native CAD files, a clean tag standard, and months of setup. Real projects have scanned PDFs, three revisions of the legend sheet, and a deadline next week.
From PDF to validated deliverable
- 1
You send me the P&IDs as PDF. Scanned or native, any vendor, any revision. No CAD conversion and no template setup on your side.
- 2
The platform reads every sheet and extracts the process data: line numbers with size, spec, fluid code, insulation and tracing; equipment tags with service descriptions; valve tags and counts; instrument tags with loop numbers; specialty items; and off-page connectors so lines resolve across sheets.
- 3
Every extracted value carries its source coordinates, so you can click any row and land on the exact spot on the drawing it came from. Duplicate tags, orphan connectors and spec breaks that do not match are flagged automatically.
- 4
The output is reviewed, checked and stamped by a licensed Texas PE before it reaches you. It arrives as Excel or CSV in your line list and equipment list templates, ready for the next discipline.
Deliverables
- Line list / line designation table with process conditions, insulation and tracing
- Equipment list with tags, service and connectivity
- Valve list with spec cross-reference and counts
- Specialty item list
- Instrument tag list ready for the instrument index
- Tie-in point list for brownfield scopes
- Discrepancy report: duplicate tags, orphan connectors, spec mismatches
Every deliverable is checked, approved and stamped by a licensed Texas PE, and every value traces back to its coordinates on the source drawing. Neo Engineering Solutions is SOC 2 Type 1 attested.
Common questions
Does automated P&ID extraction work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. Most of the P&IDs I receive are scanned or flattened PDFs from legacy projects. The platform reads them directly. Native vector PDFs extract faster and cleaner, but neither format needs converting to CAD first.
How accurate is the extraction?
Every value is tied back to its coordinates on the drawing and reviewed before release. The deliverable is checked, approved and stamped by a licensed Texas PE, the same standard of care you would apply to a manual takeoff, at a fraction of the hours.
How much faster is it than a manual P&ID takeoff?
Up to 10x faster on the extraction and list-building work, including the PE review, compared with a manual takeoff of the same drawing set.
Is my project data secure?
Neo Engineering Solutions is SOC 2 Type 1 attested and runs on Microsoft 365 enterprise infrastructure. See the Security page for how project drawings are handled and retained.
