Instrument index and I/O list generation from P&IDs
Every instrument bubble on your P&IDs becomes a validated row in the instrument index, with loops, signal types and I/O allocation. Datasheets populated from the same data.
Why this deliverable still takes weeks
The instrument index is built by reading every bubble on every P&ID: tag, loop, function, and the line or equipment it is on. Then the I/O list is built from the index, and the datasheets are built from the I/O list. Three deliverables, one source, and each one typed by hand.
Instrument tags are where duplicates hide. Two disciplines, two revisions, one tag used twice. It surfaces during commissioning when the control system has one point and the field has two devices.
Control system vendors need the I/O count early to size the cabinets, so the index is on the critical path from day one.
From PDF to validated deliverable
- 1
The platform reads every instrument bubble on the P&IDs, parses the ISA tag into function and loop, and links the instrument to the line or equipment it sits on.
- 2
Signal types are assigned from the function and the loop drawing where available, and I/O is allocated by type and by area to give the control system vendor a count they can size against.
- 3
Duplicate tags across sheets and revisions are detected and listed. Every row carries its source sheet and coordinates.
- 4
The index, I/O list and populated datasheet fields are delivered in your templates and reviewed and stamped by a licensed Texas PE.
Deliverables
- Instrument index with tag, loop, function, service and P&ID reference
- I/O list with signal type, I/O type and area allocation
- Instrument datasheet fields populated from the index and process data
- Cable schedule and junction box schedule when loop drawings are provided
- Duplicate tag and orphan loop report
Every deliverable is checked, approved and stamped by a licensed Texas PE, and every value traces back to its coordinates on the source drawing. Neo Engineering Solutions is SOC 2 Type 1 attested.
Common questions
Which tagging standards are supported?
ISA 5.1 tagging by default, configured to your project's variations in the legend sheet. Non-ISA legacy tagging on brownfield projects is handled by mapping the legend before extraction.
Can you produce the I/O list without loop drawings?
Yes. A first-pass I/O list is produced from the P&IDs alone using function and typical signal assignment. Loop drawings refine signal types and add the cable and junction box schedules.
How are duplicate tags handled?
Every tag is checked across the whole drawing set and across revisions. Duplicates are listed in a discrepancy report with both source locations so your lead instrument engineer decides, rather than the tool.
